The height of the fortress walls reaches thirty meters. The location of the fortress is such that it is a border point between the regions of Thessaly and Macedonia. This Byzantine citadel originally belonged to the ancient city of Heraclius. It was built by order of the Thracian king Boniface. In the Middle Ages, the fortress was of great strategic and defensive importance. Platamonas is a prime example of Byzantine architecture. Quite a lot of tourists usually come here for visiting this historical monument. We also recommend reading Ruins of the city of Dion in Greece Topic: Platamonas Fortress in Greece. |
