The fortress was built in 1748-1764. by the Swedish engineer Augustin Ehrensvard on the island at the entrance to Lovisi Bay. Here, on the shore, there is a complex of defensive fortifications. However, construction was stopped due to the outbreak of the Pomeranian War of 1757-1762. and the Russian-Swedish war of 1808-1809. By 1808, the fortress had not yet been completed.
Lovisi Fortress has always been one of the main goals of the Russian army. At the first stage of the war, the fortress was taken without assault. After the war of 1808-1809. Svartholm fortress lost its strategic importance and was used as a naval base and a prison. In 1855, during the Crimean War, the fortress was blown up by British troops.
Since the 1960s. work began on the restoration and reconstruction of the fortress, its partial re-equipment into a museum. By 1998, all work was completed.
