A volcano with a somewhat familiar sounding (at least in Russian) name Bratan is one of the large volcanoes located in Indonesia on the island of Bali. The highest point of Bratan, which is a 6x11 km caldera, is the Batukau stratovolcano, in addition, the volcano will be surrounded by several cones formed about 23 thousand years ago.

Several lakes are located directly inside the caldera, the largest of which is Lake Bratan , revered by the locals and having the status of sacred. The lake is used for irrigation of rice terraces, and on its shore is the Ulun Danu temple, built in honor of the Maiden Sri, the goddess of fertility. A large number of tourists come to see the unusual structure, but only Balinese can visit the temple. Visitors who were not allowed into the sanctuary can be comforted by a stroll through the beautiful park laid out on the shore.

The valley at the foot of the Bratan is covered with lush forests and is inhabited. Many hot and geothermal springs are used by local people to generate electricity, which is generally not typical for Indonesia. The last volcanic activity in the Bratan area, if there was, was several thousand years ago, which is the reason that the valley at the foot of the volcano is densely populated.
