Lake Bratan is considered sacred, as it is a source of moisture for irrigating nearby lands, and the temple itself is dedicated to the powerful goddess of water and fertility Devi Danu, whose cult is the oldest in Bali. Pura Ulan Danu was built in 1663 under a king from the Mengevi dynasty. It is believed that the temple was built by skilled armourers, who forged magic blades here for the royal army, but were later expelled during the war with the Javanese. The temple complex itself consists of several pagodas or, in Indonesian, measure, each of which has 3, 5, 7 or 9 floors decreasing with height, by the number of which it is possible to determine the belonging of the building to this or that deity. For example, the only measure, which has 11 floors, is dedicated to the supreme gods Shiva and Parvati; you can get to it only by a small wooden bridge. This pagoda is a real symbol of Indonesia, its image can be seen everywhere: on postcards, advertising posters and even on denominations of 50 thousand rupees. The Pura Ulan Danu temple complex is not only an important religious, but also a tourist center ... The temple and its surroundings are open to the public from half past eight in the morning until six in the evening. Tourists can ride a canoe or pedal boat, dine in a nearby restaurant, visit a market selling souvenirs and handicrafts, and feed the iguanas or take pictures with a bat or iguana. Despite the developed tourist infrastructure, access to some temple buildings is allowed only to believers and Hindu priests. Pura Ulan Danu is often the site of important religious observances.
