Agung Volcano is located in the province of Bali, located in Indonesia, on the island of the same name."Agung" in translation means"supreme" and from time immemorial is considered by the Balinese to be a sacred mountain. The height of Agung is 3142 meters, the diameter of its crater is 375x520 meters, at the foot there is a dense forest, alternating with the height of a bare volcanic landscape. Agung is the highest point of the island of Bali and the fifth largest volcano in Indonesia.

Agung is a typical stratovolcano that erupted only four times in the prehistoric period, which is very small when compared to other Indonesian volcanoes. The last eruption took place in 1963-1964, accompanied by the release of the strongest pyroclastic flow and caused the death of almost two thousand people, several thousand more were injured and left homeless. Interesting, that the Besakih temple located right on the slope of the volcano was practically not damaged during the cataclysm, which, of course, was perceived by the Balinese as a real miracle. Since then, little activity in Agung was observed in the 80s of the 20th century and at the very beginning of the 21st century, when heat anomalies at the foot of the volcano caused fires.

Agung is definitely one of the most notable sights of Bali. Every year, many tourists climb the volcano, from the top of which a stunning view opens up. When deciding to climb the sacred mountain, you should first make sure that the time chosen for the ascent does not coincide with the local religious holiday, otherwise you risk incurring the displeasure of the indigenous people, as well as all known Balinese gods. Getting to the top of Agung is not easy: the steep rocky slopes of the volcano can become a serious obstacle for an unprepared person. It is better to start climbing Agung in the early morning, as by 12 noon the top of the mountain will be enveloped in clouds, and it will be almost impossible to see anything interesting from it. It would also be a good idea to hire a local guide who will not only show you the way, but also tell local legends and traditions related to the sacred place.
