The park is located in the center of Lake Haukvesi, which is part of the lake system of Lake Saimaa, and includes several islands. The national park was created with the aim of preserving the main natural resources and characteristics of the"Lakeside Finland". On the main island of the park, there is a farm that uses slash and burn farming as a preservation of the outgoing forms of culture. The island is covered with meadows and forests.
