It was here in 1889 that the bodies of Crown Prince Rudolf, the only son of Franz Joseph the First, and Baroness Wetsera, his beloved, were discovered. Rudolph was later to become emperor, but after his death, Franz Ferdinand, the crown prince's cousin, was appointed ruler of the Austrian Empire. In 1914, the emperor was killed in Sarajevo, triggering the outbreak of World War I.
