The ruins of Aggstein Castle have been attracting tourists for a long time. Most recently, the castle was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In 1231, the castle was conquered by the vassals of Duke Frederick II. Subsequently, the castle changed owners several times.

In 1429, Albrecht II bought the castle and turned it into a fortified fortress to protect the Danube.

During the first Turkish during the war the castle was completely destroyed. Soon, a castle with stronger walls was erected in its place, this building has survived to this day.
