The modern floating stage is located on an artificial island among the lake waters. Every year, during the festival, a huge auditorium on the shore receives about 7 thousand spectators. The stage scenery is selected each time in accordance with the theatrical production.

The first Bregenzer Festspiel took place in 1946. Initially, the idea of holding the festival seemed absurd, since there was not a single theater building in the city. Soon a solution was found – the festival was held on the shores of Lake Constance, and the stage was housed on two moored barges. Mozart's opera Bastien et Bastienne was staged that day. One barge housed a symphony orchestra, while the other barge was used directly as a stage.

The auditorium was equipped on the shore and at that time could accommodate up to 6.5 thousand spectators. In case of rain, concerts were held in an indoor hall with a capacity of 1,000 seats. Since then, the festival has become a tradition, and every year from July to August, art lovers gather here.

Subsequently, a concrete foundation was erected at the bottom of the lake, on which the flooded part of the stage was installed. Before each new performance, the appearance of the stage changes, and it becomes the main decoration of the production. Behind the stage are also the dressing rooms, the engine room and the orchestra pit.

Most of the stage features works by such great composers as Mozart, Puccini, Verdi and Bernstein. Classical opera is often performed `` in a new way '' – the performances feature special effects, sophisticated stage scenery and the latest acoustic system. Part of the action is often transferred to the water surface of the lake.

Currently, the Bregenzer Festspiel scene is also used for other purposes. For example, in 2008, the live broadcast of the world football championship was made here. The auditorium was packed with football fans – their number was more than 160 thousand.
