The historic center of Vienna today is the central area of the city, which until 1850 was actually the city of Vienna. Until the 19th century, the old city was surrounded by fortress walls and was divided into four squares (according to the number of main gates): northeastern, southeastern, southwestern and northwestern.

Today the old town is surrounded by the wide ring street Ringstrasse, which was built by Franz Joseph I on the site of the city walls.

The historic center of Vienna is the most popular place visited by tourists. Here are the main attractions of the city: the Hofburg Palace, the Cathedral of St. Stephen (the patron saint of the city), the City Hall, the building of the Vienna Opera as well as the Stadtpark with the Strauss monument and famous flower gardens.

St. Stephen's Square is located in the center of Vienna's old town, from which the city's main street, Graben, begins. Not far from the square are the house-museum of the famous composer Mozart and the residence museum of the Teutonic Order.

The historic center of Vienna has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2001.
