Rating: 7,8/10 (4903 votes) Heldenplatz or Heroes' Square is one of the historic squares in Vienna. The square gained particular fame after Adolf Hitler spoke from the balcony of the New Castle in March 1938, proclaiming the unification of Austria with Germany. The square was built during the reign of Franz Joseph. It was mainly used for parades, and is the outer palace square of the Hofburg. In the center of the square there are monuments to two commanders - Archduke Karl and Prince Eugene.
