Until 1970, the fort was the residence of the ruler, then the main police department of Ajman was located here. The fort itself was rebuilt and completed many times. The last addition to the fort is a wind tower. In 1981, the Ajman National History Museum was opened in the fort. The museum displays exhibits that were discovered during the laying of an oil pipeline near the city in 1986. Some items are more than four thousand years old. The museum displays archaeological and ethnographic sections, a collection of ancient weapons and manuscripts, ancient handicrafts and jewelry. There is also an exhibition of wax figures, which recreates the life of the ancient aborigines. Photography is not allowed in the museum. Photographs are only allowed outside the museum.
