Church of the Holy Spirit in Heidelberg   is the largest and most significant temple in the city. The church is located on the Market Square in the old part of Heidelberg. Today, the temple is a Gothic hall cathedral topped with a superb Baroque roof.

The church was first mentioned in documents from the Schonau monastery, subsidized in 1229. Later, the church is mentioned in documents from 1353 and 1358.

During excavations in 1936, the remains of a late Romanesque basilica built in 1299 were found. At the end of the 13th century, the basilica was rebuilt and took the form of a late Romanesque three-nave church. The church was small, which was identified and documented during excavations in 1886 and 1936.

In 1398, the old choirs of the church were replaced by new and bright halls. Since at that time Heidelberg was the only elector's residence, it was decided to build a more representative church in the city that would meet all the requirements of the burial vault of the rulers of the Palatinate. And after Rupert III was elected king of Rome, the representative function became more important.

The architects of the church were Hans Marks, who worked there until 1426, and Jorg, who worked here until 1439 of the year. Niklaus Eseler was invited to the city to build the tower, who was later replaced by Lorenz Lechler.

In May 1693, during the War of the Palatinate Succession, the church building was badly damaged. The French troops, having locked a large number of people in the church, set it on fire. Many people died in the stampede, and the survivors experienced a lot of bullying by French looters who robbed the church.

In 1698, a number of reconstruction works were carried out in the building, during which the roof was restored ... In 1709, the tower acquired a Baroque dome.

The last reconstruction works in the building were carried out in 1987-1985.
During the War of the Palatinate Succession, some of the cathedral's burials were ravaged, only the grave of Ruprecht III has survived to this day.
