Ensemble of covered bridges – a special kind of bridges that have survived in single copies around the world is one of the most interesting sights of Strasbourg.

The bridges were built as defensive fortifications around 1230. Only 4 bridges were erected: one for each branch of the Il River. The location of each of the bridges was calculated in such a way that the troops on them would cut off the enemy's path to the residential areas of the city. until 1780, they were really covered, but the roof was dilapidated with time and lost its relevance. During the Great Revolution, the bridges were completely rebuilt in stone, the roof was removed, and cannons were placed on the bridges themselves.

A defensive tower was located on each of the bridges, a fifth tower was built nearby, and was intended for other purposes. To this day, only three towers have survived: Heinrich, French and Hans von Altheim's tower. The Tower of Chains, built at the same time, could not withstand a serious fire in 1889.

The Executioner's Tower, built at a distance, was an identification of all the most terrible things that the Middle Ages brought to Europe. This tower was directly subordinate to the Inquisition. Inside it, several departments were equipped, where all criminals, without exception, were tortured and executed. The executioners had at their disposal the most sophisticated instruments of torture, some of which were invented directly in this tower. The cruelty of the workers of the Tower of Executioners horrified not only ordinary people, but also judges, who, however, could not do anything during the period of the Inquisition. The death penalty was common for these walls until the 19th century. Torture chambers and instruments have survived to this day, and are wildly popular with tourists.

Like a number of other structures in Old Strasbourg, covered bridges and towers were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988- m year.

To date, all bridges have been restored and given to pedestrians. Here you can often see tourists taking pictures of themselves. The bridges offer wonderful views of many other sights of Strasbourg.
