It was built on the site of an older parish church (1137). The cathedral was consecrated in honor of St. Stephen. The temple was rebuilt several times. It was originally built as a Romanesque basilica, then it was rebuilt in the late Romanesque style, later in the Gothic style. And only in 1523 the temple was rebuilt, expanded and finally formed, and has the appearance that we see today. St. Stephen's Cathedral has two towers: north and south. The South Tower is approximately 137 meters high. 343 steps lead to its top. There is an observation deck at the top of the tower, climbing which you can admire a beautiful panoramic view of Vienna and its surroundings. The north tower was never completed. In 1579 it was crowned with a Renaissance dome. Under the vault of the dome is the largest Austrian bell - Pummerin, weighing 21383 kilograms and having a diameter of 314 centimeters. It was made in 1683 from 180 Turkish cannons, which were captured by the Austrians during the second Turkish invasion. Many important relics and artistic treasures are kept in St. Stephen's Cathedral. Among them are medieval stained-glass windows and sculptures, monuments and tombstones, images of saints, altars, stone pulpits made by famous sculptors. Many great emperors, bishops, wealthy merchants found their rest in the cathedral. for example, Duke Rudolph IV, Prince Eugene of Savoy, Emperor Frederick III, architects Hildebrandt, Fischer and others. At the end of World War II, the temple was damaged by fire and the Pummerin bell shattered. After the war, the cathedral was restored only after 7 years by the efforts of almost all residents of Vienna and Austria in general. In 1952 the cathedral was reopened to parishioners and guests of the capital. But work on the restoration of the temple was carried out for more than 10 years. At present, St. Stephen's Cathedral is fully restored and is a functioning temple, where services are held every day.
