The baptistery was built in the XII-XIV centuries and thanks to such a long history of its creation carries the features of the Gothic and Romanesque traditions. The first architect of the building was Diotisalvi, who was replaced by Giovanni and Nicolo Pisano. The building has three tiers. The lower tier is decorated with arches supported by axial columns and narrow windows. The middle tier is a series of double arches, which are crowned with stone laces surrounding the faces of the saints. The third tier has triangular jagged ends above the windows, a large dome made of reddish stone, and a ledge, on which the sculpture of St. John is located. The pride of the baptistery – a hexagonal pulpit and a font built in the 13th century. The department is the first dated work by Nicolo Pisano. It was made of brown, white and light green marble. The chair is supported by a central and six side columns. Three columns rest on the backs of lions bent over prey, which is a symbol of the victory of Christianity over paganism. A sinner, a heretic and an unbaptized are depicted on the base of the central column. The columns are interconnected by arches decorated with images of the apostles and prophets. The six virtues are depicted in allegorical form on the columns under the parapets.
