The museum exhibits works by contemporary sculptors and painters of the 20th and 21st centuries. The museum was founded in 1969 when Bernhart Sprengel, a German chocolate maker, donated his art collection to the city, as well as allocated funds for the construction of a new museum building. Peter and Ursulla Trint were appointed architects of the building. The museum opened its doors to visitors in 1972. Later, the collection of the museum was replenished with works of art belonging to the public. Currently, the halls of the museum exhibit works demonstrating several styles of art – Germanic Expressionism, French Cubism, Conceptualism, Minimalism, as well as works of art from the post-war period. More recently, the collection has been replenished with samples of artistic photography and art.
