The main cemetery in Karlsruhe is one of the oldest municipal cemeteries in Germany. The cemetery was created by the architect Josef Durm in 1873. Today, there is a chapel in the cemetery where the funeral takes place. Previously, there was an old crematorium on this site. The cemetery also has a place for Islamic burials according to all traditions and customs. The Jewish cemetery was set up on a separate site, fenced off from others. The main portal of the cemetery was made in the image of the Roman triumphal arches. Just behind the portal is the Campo Santo-style courtyard. A chapel and a morgue can be observed here. This architectural ensemble is considered the progenitor of the neo-Renaissance style in Baden. In 1895, a building for rituals was erected on the Jewish site. At the beginning of the 20th century, a crematorium was built in the cemetery, faced with reddish sandstone. The author of the project is the architect August Sturzenacker.
