From the 17th century until 1782, the palace housed the court of the Inquisition. After the court ceased to exist, the instruments of torture and the secret archive were set on fire. For a short time, the palace was used as a shelter. From the 19th to the middle of the 20th century, the building housed customs and judicial services. After the restoration work was carried out, the palace was given to the administration of the city university.
The painted wooden ceiling, created at the end of the 14th century by the painters Darenu da Palermo, Cecco da Naro and Simone da Corleone, has survived in the Barons' Hall.
