The main basilica of Lyon, located on the hill of the same name in the historic Fourviere district, has the same appearance that it had in the years of its foundation – in the XII century. Chronicles say that the church was built on the top of the hill back in 1168, the place was not chosen by chance, since it was necessary to build a Christian temple on the site of the once main forum Romans. The forum was built during the reign of Emperor Trajan, and, in fact, the hill was named after him, and later the whole area of Lyon. The church stood until the 15th century, when countless wars with Huguenots were so destructive that opponents of the Roman Catholic Church did not even shy away from destroying churches. Such was the fate awaited the ancient medieval church on the top of the highest hill of Lyon. The temple was rebuilt 50 years after its destruction. The most famous visitor to the basilica in the 17th century was the French queen Anne of Austria, who chose this particular temple to pray for the birth of the heir to the French crown. By the 19th century, the question arose about the restoration of the basilica. The walls of the temple began to literally crumble before our eyes, and it was temporarily closed until the end of the restoration work. Work began in 1830. It was decided to dismantle the basilica to the ground and rebuild it in the same form that it had in the XII century. The reconstruction took more than 30 years. And the interior of the temple was restored only in 1976. We also recommend reading Saint-Jean Cathedral in France, Lyon resort Topic: Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourviere in France, Lyon resort. |
