St. Maximilian Church is one of the most ancient and popular pilgrimage Catholic churches in Dusseldorf.

In 1651 six monks- Franciscans began to conduct church services in the city citadel. The construction of the church was completed in 1654. The construction was carried out with donations from the townspeople. In those years, the building housed both the church and the monastery of the Franciscan order.

In 1673, the church authorities gave the go-ahead for the opening of a religious school for clergymen at the monastery, and in 1695 - and ndash; a parish school for children.

In 1737, the church was expanded as it no longer accommodated parishioners. The consecration took place in the same year in honor of St. Anthony.

Subsequently, thanks to generous donations at the monastery, a hospital for the sick and a brewery were opened, and the Franciscans also financially helped the homeless and the poor.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the church and monastery were under threat of closure, but this did not happen due to active protests from the townspeople. Only the monastery was closed, but the church continued to exist. At that time, the church bore the name of St. Maximilian.

Currently, the church is a parish, has expanded rights and includes the Franciscan Lyceum, the Catholic city council, a charity service and a kindergarten.

One of the features of the temple is the fact that at the beginning of the 19th century, Heinrich Heine, a world famous poet, critic and publicist, studied here. For more than a millennium, the temple has been practicing the best musical traditions, which the parishioners are proud of. In the 19th century, Robert Schumann and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdi served as music directors in the church.

The main attraction of the church is the miraculous image of Our Lady, as well as important artistic and cultural values of Dusseldorf.
