The Kammerzel Mansion or Kammerzel House is the most interesting and unusual building in Strasbourg. The mansion was built in 1427, reconstructed in 1589. It was originally a typical German residential building with many windows based on diagonal wooden beams at a particular angle to each other. Later, during a global reconstruction, reliefs in the spirit of the late Gothic appeared on the facade, depicting both biblical subjects and many other sketches. Immediately after construction, the Mansion was resold to many owners, and until the 19th century the name of the 'Old House' was assigned to it. In 1850, the Old House was acquired by the wealthy grocer Kammerzel, which gave a new name to this monument of medieval architecture. Thanks to the new owner, the interior of the house was completely reconstructed, and the walls were decorated with paintings by famous German artists at that time. After Kammerzel's death in 1879, the mansion was handed over to the city according to the will. Today, all the premises of the Mansion are occupied by one of the most luxurious restaurants in Strasbourg.
