The church, located in the 6th arrondissement of Paris, is a monument of Jesuit classicism.
It took a long time to build the church – from 1646 to 1777.
It is difficult to say what was on the site of the church before the construction began. Historians rely on data from archaeological excavations dating back to the 18th century, when graves dating from the 10th century were discovered at the foot of the church. It has been suggested that, nevertheless, there was one of the early Christian churches.
One of the bell towers of the church was never completed, at first due to lack of funds, and then due to the Franco-Prussian war. In 1870, the unfinished bell tower was badly damaged by an attack by Prussian soldiers,
