Reichenau Monastery Island on Lake Constance – the island on which the Benedictine monastery rises. The entire island, including the monastery, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2000.

The monastery, built in the 8th century, was the most important cultural and religious center of southern Germany until the 11th century. The monastery belongs to the most important monuments of the Carolingian era. The monastery has the churches of Saints Mary and Mark, Saints Peter and Paul, St. George. All of them were built in the period from the 9th to the 11th centuries. The wall painting that adorns the monastery is rightfully considered the oldest in Germany.

The monastery flourished during the Christianization of Alemannia (VIII – IX centuries). Abbot Hayton established ties with Byzantium, Greek was taught at the monastery. According to the books, the apostle of the Slavs Saint Methodius and his Greek companions-missionaries visited it. The monastery flourished for the second time during the Ottonian Renaissance. The school of book miniatures at the monastery became famous. And in the XI century, the scientist and theorist of music Herman lived and worked in the monastery.

Since 1803, the monastery has been secularized, and two hundred years later a small group of Benedictine monks settled on the island.
