Teatro Carlo Felice is the main stage of Genoa. In addition to opera performances, the theater also hosts music shows, chamber orchestras and ballet performances. The theater is located in Piazza Ferrari.

In 1825, the local architect Carlo Barabino prepared a project for a new theater, which was planned to be built on the site of the old Basilica of San Domenico. By the beginning of construction, the temple was dismantled, and the Dominican monks were transferred to another parish. In March 1826, the first stone was laid in the foundation of the building.

Already in 1828, a grand opening of the theater took place in the still unfinished building, in honor of which the first opera Bianca and Fernando ' Bellini.

In 1892, in honor of   On the 400th anniversary of the discovery of America by Columbus, the theater building has been restored. In 1941, during the Second World War, the roof of the theater was pierced by a shell fired by a British warship. The shell destroyed the ceiling of the main hall, made in an extravagant 19th century style. In 1943 the stage of the theater was practically destroyed due to a bomb explosion. The theater was also seriously damaged by marauders who `` hunted '' behind metal structures. In September 1944, during an air raid, the facade of the building was practically destroyed.

Large-scale reconstruction work in the theater began almost immediately after the end of the war. In 1951, Paolo Antonio Kessa proposed his project, but was refused. In 1977 the project, proposed by Carlo Scarpa, was approved, but the sudden death of the architect again stalled construction. The next architect of the building was Aldo Rossi.

During the renovation work, part of the facade acquired its original appearance, and the interior of the theater was completely changed. In 1991 the theater opened to the general public.
