Teatro Komunale is one of the oldest theaters in the city. The theater is located near the famous `` falling '' towers, in the heart of Bologna. The theater building is a creation of Antonio Galli Bibien – a renowned architect, painter and decorator, and today is an excellent example of 18th century Italian architecture. In addition to theater performances, the building regularly hosts exhibitions, commercial and industrial events.
The history of the theater is quite unusual. In February 1745 at night the theater of the Malvezzi family, erected in 1653, collapsed. At that time, it was the most prominent theater, instilling in the locals a love for musical performances. His loss became a citywide grief. In 1775, Pope Lambertini gave permission to build a new theater. The building project was entrusted by the Senate to the architect Antonio Galli Bibiena.
The grand opening of the theater took place in 1763. The opera Triumph of Clelia by Pietro Metastasio was the theater's first performance. In the 19th century, the popularity of the Teatro Comunale increased incredibly, thanks to the works of Rossini staged here. In 1843, Verdi's opera Nabucco was staged 32 times on the theater stage. Later, the theater began to stage works by foreign composers, of which Richard Wagner was the most popular.
A terrible fire in 1913 seriously damaged the main portico and the facade of the building, which were soon restored.
Today, Teatro Komunale is considered one from the most famous Italian opera houses.
