In the early years of its existence, the museum's collection was replenished with donated works of art that suited the tastes of its time. The collection of the museum acquired its consistency after the inauguration of Alfred Lichtwark, the first director of the Kunsthalle. The museum now has the sections `` Medieval Art '' and 'Art of the 19th Century'. The art of the 19th century is represented by the works of Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth, Edouard Vuillard, Andres Zorn, Pierre Bonnard and others.
