St. Nicholas Cathedral is an Orthodox church, which today is the cathedral of the Vienna Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church.

For many centuries, Russia and Austria were connected by trade and diplomatic relations , as a result of which settlements were created for families of representatives of trade missions and diplomats. Since freedom of religion is supported in Austria, a church parish was created. Clergymen came from Russia to conduct services.

In general, Orthodox people of different nationalities who lived in Vienna attended the Church of St. George. But due to the aggravated political situation, the war, the Greeks, who served in the Church of St. George, were forced to leave the city. So the need arose to create an Orthodox Church in Vienna.

In 1762, at the request of Prince Golitsyn, the first Trinity Church was transported from Augsburg to Vienna, and also a priest, father Simeon, who became the first abbot of this church. Initially, the temple was located in the house of Prince Golitsyn and then changed its address several times.

The modern cathedral, which we see today, was built in 1893-1899. It was originally built as an ambassador's. The building was designed by the architect G.I. Kotova. Emperor Alexander III allocated a large amount of money for the construction of the temple. In April 1899, the cathedral was consecrated by Archbishop Jerome of Warsaw and Kholmsk.

During the First World War, diplomatic relations between Russia and Austria were severed, respectively, the embassy and the cathedral were closed. In February 1924, diplomatic relations between Austria and the USSR began to improve, and the cathedral was reopened.

After the end of the Great Patriotic War in 1945, the cathedral was taken over by the Moscow Patriarch. In 1962, St. Nicholas Cathedral was renamed into a cathedral.

In 2003-2008, restoration work was carried out in the cathedral.

The building of the cathedral was built in forms of pseudo-Russian architecture and has 2 floors:
  • On the top floor there is a temple consecrated in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The main relics of this temple are: the icon of St. Nicholas and the icon of the Mother of God.
  • The lower floor houses a temple dedicated to the memory of Emperor Alexander III. There is a baptismal font for the sacrament of baptism.
