The castle is located on Via Cavour, between the main port of Palermo and the Gulf of Cala. During the Arab period, the castle was a seaside fortress that defended the commercial quarter. In 1081, St. Peter's Church was built next to the castle. The castle was significantly expanded by the Normans – a round tower was attached to it. In the XII century, Frederick II ordered to dig a moat around the castle. In subsequent years, the castle fell into disrepair due to numerous local riots, and part of its walls were also dismantled for the construction of new buildings. In our time, the castle has been partially restored. Today here allow tourists. We also recommend reading Calatafimi quarter in Italy, Sicily resort Topic: Castle by the sea in Italy, Sicily resort. |
