The castle was built in the 7th century, but little has survived to this day. The castle was built by the Byzantines, it was surrounded by a three-meter thick wall, a moat and eight towers for protection. The only way to get to the fortress was through a wooden bridge thrown over the moat. The main function of the castle was to protect the city from Arab raids.

Around 1200 the castle was rebuilt by the crusaders, and in 1222 it was destroyed due to a strong earthquake. The castle was not restored anymore, and two other fortresses were erected in the port of Paphos.

The castle got its name from the forty granite columns found during excavations. Tourists visiting the castle can see columns, remains of towers and dungeons, spiral staircases,
