St. Jadwiga Cathedral - Catholic cathedral in Berlin, residence of Cardinal Georg Sterzinski, Archbishop of Berlin. The cathedral was built in the XVIII century as the first Catholic Church in Prussia, authorized by Frederick II. King wanted to offer the Catholic immigrants, of whom there were quite a few, a place of worship. That is why the church is named after the patroness of Silesia and Brandenburg, St. Jadwige of Silesia. Construction of a building designed by Georg Wenceslaus von Knobelsdorff in the likeness of Roman Pantheon, was started in 1747. Several times it was interrupted and delayed due to financial difficulties. It was only opened in November 1773, when a friend of the king, Ignacy Krasicki, presided over the opening of the cathedral. After the pogroms of 1938, the so-called Kristallnacht, the canon of the cathedral, Bernhard Lichtenberg, prayed for the Jews in the evening prayer. He was later arrested by the Nazis and died on his way to the Dachau concentration camp. His remains were transferred to the crypt of the cathedral in 1965. During the Second World War, during the air attacks on Berlin, the cathedral was almost completely burned down. Restoration work was carried out from 1952 to 1963.
