Le Baux de Provence – ruined city located in the west of Provence, north-east of Arles. The ruins occupy a huge rocky plateau, you can inspect them at any time.

The plateau was inhabited in the early Stone Age. The first traces of the appearance of French suzerains in Le Bo belong to the middle of the X century, and in the XII – In the 13th century, the city became the center of the county and, moreover, the center of the refined poetry of the Minnesingers.

In 1631, Louis XIII besieged the city, but the inhabitants, who dreamed of peace, offered   to the king to enter the city and promised to destroy their defenses. This was done two years later. And a decade later, Le Bo was given as a gift to the Dukes of Grimaldi, who retained the duchy until 1791. The last representative of the noble family of de Beaux was the Marquis de Beaux, Karl Maxim, who died in 1880

In the 20th century, another fact was discovered related to the city and made it significant again. The mineral 'bauxite' was found in the vicinity of the city, which supports the production of aluminum.
