Rating: 7,5/10 (100 votes) Roman theater – a theater built during the reign of Emperor Augustus in the 1st century. The theater accommodated about eight thousand spectators. During the Middle Ages, it was used as a quarry. The city wall of Arles was built from the stone worked here. Several columns have survived from the back wall of the stage. Excavations are constantly carried out on the territory of the theater, the artifacts found are exhibited in the Art Museum of Arles. The most famous and valuable find – sculpture of Venus of Arles; and the statue of the goddess Diana, found in 1651, is today one of the Louvre exhibits. The theater, like other attractions of Arles, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
