Berlin TV Tower – the tallest building in Germany, reaching 368 meters, the fourth tallest TV tower in Europe (after Ostankino in Moscow, Kiev and Riga). The construction of the TV tower was planned back in the 1950s. The chosen location (the Muggelberg hills in the southeast of the city) was too close to Berlin-Schonefeld airport, which is why construction was suspended. In 1964, it was decided to build a TV tower on Alexanderplatz. Construction work began a year later. The budget grew sixfold compared to the planned amount and amounted to 200 million marks. Mostly local materials were used, but some had to be purchased from foreign companies: cables, elevators, air conditioning from a Swedish company, and protective glass – in the Netherlands. The TV tower was built in four years, in October 1969 it was put into operation. Every year, about a million visitors rise to the tower's observation deck. It has become a real landmark in Berlin.
