Hohenbaden Castle, also known as the Old Castle, was erected by Hermann II on the Buttert cliffs in 1102. In XI – In the 15th century, the castle was used as the residence of the margraves of Baden-Baden. In 1479, the residence was moved by Christophe the First to the new castle. Hohenbaden Castle was completely destroyed during a strong fire in 599.

The castle was one of the first medieval buildings to have a sewage system in a deep underground.

Nowadays, in the Knights' Hall, one can observe the Aeolian harp, which is a massive wooden frame with 120 strings stretched in unison. A little gust of wind sets the strings in motion making the harp make enchanting sounds. The harp was installed in the castle in 1999 and was assisted by musician Rudiger Oppermann.
