St. Jacob's Church is one of the most popular churches in Lubeck. The main attractions of the church are the Bremse altar dating from the 15th century, wall paintings from the 14th century and two wonderful organs from the 16th century. In the memorial chapel, located in the northern bell tower, you can see a damaged rescue boat from the sunken barque Pamir.

Originally, the church tower rose only two stories above the nave. In 1375, the courtyard of the Holy Spirit Hospital suffered from the fall of this tower. In 1628, the tower would be repaired, and in 1636 the walls of the church were repaired. The spire was repaired in 1657. In 1901, lightning struck the tower, as a result of which the spire burned to the ground.

The Church of St. James, along with other medieval buildings in the historic center of Lubeck, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
