The Hospital of the Holy Spirit is the best surviving medieval building of this kind in Central Europe. The hospital was built in 1280 with donations from Lubeck merchants and is designed to accommodate 170 elderly and poor people. The building operated in its capacity until 1970. In one part of the complex there is now a small shelter.

In the western part of the hospital there is a hospital church, built in 1286, decorated with frescoes of the 14th century `` Christ and Madonna enthroned '', `` Almighty Lord ''; and late Gothic carved altar figures.
