Zeichhaus is the oldest building located on Unter den Linden street. Built as an arsenal. The first stone of this building was laid in 1695. Its construction was completed only by 1730. It is considered one of the most beautiful buildings of the German Baroque. The facades of the building are decorated with allegorical figures. On the main portal there is an image of King Frederick I, who ordered the construction of the Zeichhaus. Frederick's coat of arms is carried by two goddesses of Victory; the inscription above the entrance states the importance of the judicious use of weapons; four female figures symbolize arithmetic, pyrotechnics, mechanics and geometry. Zeichhaus was destroyed by Napoleon's troops in 1806. In 1817-1821. the building was restored under the leadership of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, however, during the Second World War, the building was destroyed again. From 1952 to 1990, the Arsenal housed the Museum of German History (GDR). After the unification of the country, its areas and expositions were transferred to the German th historical museum. The museum, founded in October 1987 in honor of the city's 750th anniversary, was then located in the Reichstag building in West Berlin ... A building was specially built for the German Historical Museum, located near the Reichstag. Aldo Rossi, an Italian architect, won the competition for the design of the museum building. However, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, plans changed and in 1990 the Federal Government transferred the squares and the collection of the Museum of German History (GDR) to the German History Museum. So, the building of the arsenal Zeichhaus took over the German Historical Museum. The first expositions were opened in September 1991. In 1998, restoration work began in Zeichhaus. The courtyard and foyer opened in the spring of 2004 and the permanent exhibition opened in the summer of 2006. Since 2003, access to the second building of the museum has been opened, where specialized exhibitions are held. The German Historical Museum is also notable for the fact that it is one of the first in Germany to open its own web server, which has become the most significant and popular museum server in Germany. The museum itself is one of the most visited museums in the country. The permanent exhibition of the museum contains about 8000 historical exhibits that tell about the personalities, events and thoughts of German history from the 1st century AD. until today.
