The main purpose of the construction of this bridge was to connect the royal residence, which at that time was located in the Louvre with the market of the neighboring abbey, since the food carriages took a very long time to reach the royal court. In 1614, Maria de Medici ordered to put on the bridge a statue of her murdered husband – King Henry IV. The Great Revolution did not spare this monument either; it was smashed and thrown into the Seine. Several surviving fragments can be seen in one of the Parisian museums. In 1814, the statue was re-cast. It has been perfectly preserved to this day. We also recommend reading Pont des Arts in France, Paris resort Topic: Pont Neuf in France, Paris resort. |
