An ancient aqueduct, the highest of its kind that has survived to this day.

In 1985 it was included in the World Heritage List.

According to one version, the order for the construction of the aqueduct was given by the legendary statesman of Rome, Mark Agrippa, according to another – technologies for the production of materials for construction appeared only a century later.

The Pont du Gard regularly performed its functions until the fall of the Roman Empire. In the Middle Ages, it was used as a bridge for transporting goods, but soon the building began to collapse and further movement created the threat of complete destruction. The aqueduct was restored only during the reign of Napoleon III.
