The name refers to the entire architectural complex of the German Church, but initially it meant only the domed tower above the church, which, however, never fulfilled its sacred functions. The Baroque church, designed by Martin Grunberg, was built in 1701 – 1708 The domed tower appeared in the 80s of the 18th century as a result of a large-scale reconstruction of the square. The square in Berlin is designed after the example of Piazza del Popolo, where twin churches with domes rise. In 1881-1882, the church fell into disrepair, part of the building was demolished and restored in the neo-baroque style. During the Second World War, the German Cathedral was destroyed by fire, and restored only in 1996. The cathedral became the property of the state, and since 2002 there has been an exhibition dedicated to the German history of parliamentary democracy.
