The complex is located on the Mediterranean coast, north of the city of Nahariya, in the Western Galilee. The grotto is a large karst cave that was formed by washing out rock from the Rosh HaNikra limestone mountain. The cave is about 200 meters long. There is also a tunnel here, which, according to reports, was dug by the army of Alexander the Great, for a more convenient passage to the south after the conquest of the ancient city of Tire. In 1918, a road was built in the tunnel for the passage of motorized vehicles of the British Armed Forces. In 1942, a railway was built here, along which a railway connection passed between Palestine and Lebanon until 1948. In 1948, during the War of Independence, the Haganah's detachment blew up a tunnel to prevent the invasion of Lebanese troops. In 1968, especially for the convenience of tourists, a gallery with a length of 400 meters, a cable car was also installed to facilitate the descent to the tunnel. Today, the cable car runs two carriages, each of which can accommodate up to 15 people. Rosh HaNikra Grotto is currently a nature reserve protected by the Israeli state.
