In 1187, after the seizure of Jerusalem by Salah ad-Din, the Templars chose Akko as a new haven. The tunnel was a strategic underground passage connecting the castle with the city port. The upper part of the tunnel was built of hewn stones, and the lower part was carved right into the rock. The central fortress of the order was built at the western end of the tunnel. The Templar fortress was considered the most fortified city structure. The entrance to the fortress was protected by two powerful towers, on either side of which were attached two small towers. Each tower was adorned with a large gilded lion sculpture. We also recommend reading Museum of San Isidro in Spain, resort of Madrid Topic: Underground Templar Tunnel in Israel, Akko Resort. |
