Trakoscan Castle in Croatia
Rating: 8,4/10 (3958 votes)  Trakoschan Castle rises above the shores of Lake Varazdina. It is the most popular tourist destination in this area. The castle was founded during the Middle Ages, the first mention of it dates back to 1334. Initially, the castle was built as a fortification, but the castle was restored several times. After reconstruction at the beginning of the 19th century, the castle acquired a romantic appearance, from the medieval fortifications remained only powerful walls. At the same time, an English-style park with an artificial lake was created in front of the castle. The owners of the castle changed many times. The most famous owners are the Draskovic family, who acquired the castle at the end of the 16th century. In the middle of the 20th century, the last members of the Draskovic family were forced to emigrate to Austria, and their ancestral castle was nationalized, restored, and since 1953 a museum has been located here. The museum exhibits: a collection of firearms and small arms weapons, clothing of the late Middle Ages, a large collection of baroque and rococo furniture. But the most valuable are portraits of representatives of the Draskovic family and early photographs.
