Mausoleum of the poet and philosopher Petr Njegos in Montenegro, resort Cetinje

Petr Petrovic Njegos is a famous politician-reformer, the only peaceful ruler of Montenegro, a great philosopher and poet of the 19th century. Until now, local residents remember him with love and respect. The mausoleum was built on the site of the chapel in which Peter Njegos was buried. Its construction lasted about 5 years and was completed in 1974. The architecture of the mausoleum is simple, but the style is a bit rude. It was built of gray stone. The project of the complex belongs to the architect and sculptor Ivan Meshtrovich. According to legend, Njegos ordered to bury himself on the top of this mountain after his death in order to admire the whole of Montenegro from here, as from the top of Mount Lovcen a very beautiful view of the mountains and the Bay of Kotor opens. The courtiers of the prince offered to bury him on the highest mountain of Montenegro, to which Njegos refused, explaining that in the future, perhaps, there would be another ruler who would do more for Montenegro than he did. Then this person must be buried on the highest mountain. You can get to the top of the mountain by car, but to get to the mausoleum you have to walk up the stairs, which consists of 460 steps. At the entrance to the building of the mausoleum there are several large sculptures in national costumes. In the main hall there is a sculpture of Peter Njegos with an eagle on his shoulder, and a little lower in a marble sarcophagus, the remains of the Grand Duke rest.
