Church of San Crisogono in Italy, Rome resort
Rating: 8,2/10 (6059 votes)  The Church of San Crisogono is a titular church located in the Trastevere area. The church was consecrated in honor of the martyr Saint Chrysogonus. The first church appeared under Pope Sylvester I in 499 on the ruins of ancient buildings. In 1129, the church was completely reconstructed during the reign of Pope Innocent II, from that time only the mosaic floor, made in the Cosmatesco style, and the Campanile remained. In 1626, Cardinal Scipione Borghese ordered the rebuilding of the basilica in the Baroque style. During construction, the apse of the church was decorated with gilded bas-reliefs. The canopy over the throne – the canopy was made by Bernini. During the archaeological excavations under the church, a basilica hall dating from the 4th century was discovered, the remains of a Roman house. Also in the church behind the altar are the frescoes The Mother of God and the Child. and episodes from the life of St. Chrysogonus. There are several sarcophagi in the church, the parishioners are presented with paintings depicting Saints Benedict, Sylvester and Panteleimon.
