The church was built at the expense of Empress Eudoxia specifically to keep the `` honest chains '' with which the Apostle Peter was bound during the arrests. The empress gave the relic to Pope Leo the First. Throughout its existence, the church was rebuilt several times. The facade of the building was completed only in 1475, and the courtyard – a few years later. Today the temple houses the tombs of Pope Julius II and the painter Antonio Polaiolo. Michelangelo was commissioned to design the papal tomb.
