Rating: 8,4/10 (1004 votes) St. John's Church, also known as the Church of St. John of Nepomuk, is today one of the most visited places in Brno. The second name of the temple – Azamkirche, in honor of its architect Azam. The church is located on Zelena Gora. The construction of the church was carried out by order of the abbot of the Zdar monastery in 1720. The entire architectural complex of the temple was created in a mixture of Baroque and Gothic styles. According to legend, John Nepomuk was the confessor of the wife of Wenceslas – Empress Joanna. Once the governor decided to find out about his wife's confession, but John flatly refused to reveal the secret. For this, the angry king ordered to drown the confessor under the Prague bridge. Also, the lending tells that after the disappearance of John five stars shone in the water on it. In memory of this, five metal stars were installed in the stone railing of the bridge. The church has a five-pointed star as a symbol. The foundation has the shape of a star, there are five angels at the main altar of the church, and there are five exits in the temple. The martyr, brought to heaven by angels, is also on the main altar. The side altars are decorated with four figures of evangelists, enveloped as if in a whirlwind of flame.
