Rating: 7,9/10 (1224 votes) The Church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere is a medieval titular basilica, consecrated in honor of Saint Cecilia – patroness of music and Christian martyr. The temple is located in the Trastevere region. The first temple appeared on this site in the 5th century, and, according to legend, was built on the site of the house of Cilicia, a Roman patrician, and her husband Valerian, who died a martyr's death under Marcus Aurelius. The new church was built in the 9th century and rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 16th century. Further restoration work was carried out in 1725, 1823, 1955, 1980. Right in front of the altar, there is a marble sculpture"Martyrdom of Saint Cecilia" raquo; by Stefano Maderno. The relics of the saint from the Callistus catacombs were transferred to the temple.
