The first temple appeared on this site in the 5th century, and, according to legend, was built on the site of the house of Cilicia, a Roman patrician, and her husband Valerian, who died a martyr's death under Marcus Aurelius.

The new church was built in the 9th century and rebuilt in the Baroque style in the 16th century. Further restoration work was carried out in 1725, 1823, 1955, 1980.

Right in front of the altar, there is a marble sculpture"Martyrdom of Saint Cecilia" raquo; by Stefano Maderno. The relics of the saint from the Callistus catacombs were transferred to the temple.

The ceiling of the church is decorated with the fresco Coronation of Saint Cyclia. There are also fragments of frescoes by Pietro Cavallini – The Dread Judgment.
