Under the Lusignans in the 4th century, two watchtowers were built here to protect the harbor. But the Venetians who came to Cyprus in the 16th century destroyed them. In 1592, with the arrival of the Turks on the island on the site of the destroyed towers, a fortress was built, which still exists today. The lower floors of the fortress were used for keeping prisoners, and the upper rooms were intended for servants of artillery pieces (gunners). The gunners climbed the stairs to the upper platform of the fortress, from where they conducted observation and shelling.
